JUSTIN HENRY BEAUTY: A little background behind the other Australian editor of Black Magazine...

Many of you would be aware by now that outside of taking fabulous pictures I am one of the Australian editors for Black magazine. For those of you who don't know, Black is a beautiful glossy publication that has an international team of top notch contributors. All of the content is assembled together and published from the New Zealand capital of Auckland then distributed around the world. I love working with Black as I'm always learning more about the business of fashion - not just the process of creating the pictures themselves. The photos I'm sharing with you now are outtakes from a beauty story I shot with the super lovely Melbourne based stylist Sophie Barker and my fellow Black Australian editor Justin Henry. We shot this story before our featured beauty editorial 'Is Anybody Out There?' which you can see in all it's glory in the latest issue of Black #19 - starring the lovely Annabel Moore.

I met Justin Henry for the first time when he was appointed the Melbourne editor of Black. I flew down from Sydney to meet him over lunch and ended up chatting with him for hours on end. One of the most rewarding aspects of working for Black has been getting to know Justin on both a personal and professional level and I really admire what he brings to the table. His perspective on fashion brings forward another dimension to the way I approach my pictures and outside of the professional advantages he is always a lot of fun to work with. Although Justin Henry advertises his skills as a makeup artist, those who know him well understand he is much more. For those of you unfamiliar with his work I would recommend visiting his website and then following him on his instagram.

Justin has worked with iconic photographers such as David La Chapelle, Ellen Von Unwerth, Annie Leibowitz - Popstars like Kylie Minogue, The Spice Girls, Christina Aguilera, Pink & Nelly Furtado - Actors including Naomi Watts, Renee Zellweger, Salma Hayek - and let's not forget the models... Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell & Erin Wasson. As cliche as it sounds the list really does go on. American Vogue, Italian Vogue, Interview, W. I know... it's really rather ridiculous! Did I mention he was the very first creative director for Maybelline New York? A role specifically created for him due to his vision of beauty and his popularity with the celebs. Celebrated accomplishments that took many years in the making - not bad for a kid from Melbourne.

On a final note, many find it hard to process that someone with such a culturally rich resume would be based here in Australia. I've two things to say about that: firstly, home is where the heart is and Justin hails originally from Melbourne and shares a special bond with his family. Believe it or not, there are other things more important than Hollywood! Shock horror! Secondly, and I'm sure I speak on behalf of Justin's other collaborators here as well, I feel really really lucky to be able to benefit from someone who brings so much experience to the table. And anyone who works with Justin regularly understands how lucky they are to have his attention and what a force he is. I think champion is an appropriate word. What an extraordinary gift that we have access to someone so special here in Australia and I want to take a moment to say thank you for all the wisdom that you've shared! You're a real talent Mr. Henry and I'm looking forward to all the adventures that are yet to unfold! I can't wait to share with y'all what we've shot for issue #20 of Black. It's very very cool!
